The veterinary medical assistant helps with appointments, surgery, animal care, and cleaning.. This is a full-time, Monday – Friday daytime hours position.
This job generally requires the ability to do the following work:
- Provide customer service such as greeting volunteers, clients, answering questions, and handling payments.
- Register and requalify clients, including assessing AHAS eligibility according to qualifying criteria.
- Answer phone calls, which will involve answering questions, directing callers to resources, screening, and scheduling appointments.
- Send reminders to clients about their appointments.
- Engage problem-solving skills to quickly and accurately assess and recognize emergency situations, difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals and take the appropriate action.
- Maintain confidentiality of information and materials.
- Handle incoming and outgoing mail and email.
- Update online patient records. Complete paperwork to accompany appointments, surgery, and euthanasias.
- Retrieve prescriptions.
- Assist with pet supply purchases such as prescribed pet food and supplements.
- Organize WDDC orders, donations, cremations, and sympathy cards.
- Contact clients to pick up cremains, prescriptions and prescription food with assistance as necessary.
- Daily cleaning tasks, cleaning the office and reception/waiting area, assist with laundry.
- Work collaboratively with volunteers who assist with client eligibility assessments, appointment and surgery paperwork and other duties.
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary technologists with cleaning of kennels, and any other needed support.
- Accompany veterinarians or veterinary technologists on home visits when necessary.
Qualifications
- Veterinary Medical Assistant certificate would be an asset
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in an animal or veterinary field (could be as a volunteer)
